About Us
Who we are and how we began
Afya Care was established in the 1990s by a specialist psychiatric nurse called Muriel Chester. For a time, Mrs Chester provided support for people in her own home under what is now known as an Adult Placement Scheme. After many great successes in helping people gain their independence, Mrs Chester opened a small residential home for people with mental health and later for people with learning disabilities, helping people on their journey to a more choice driven, fulfilled life. Mrs C, as Muriel was affectionately known, lost her battle with Sarcoma Cancer in 2010 and Sophie and Deian took over.
We now continue to help people develop skills, live active lives and increase their independence. Sophie and Deian are supported by a highly skilled, personable and dedicated staff team including care and support workers, registered managers, administrators, coordinators and supervisors.
